ABOUT THE ARTIST: Anisfeld Boris Izrailevich was born October 14, 1878, in Beltsy, Bessarabian Governorate, Moldova. Studied at the Odessa Art School (1895-1900) under G. Ladyzhinsky and K. Kostandi, at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1901-1909), and in the workshops of I. Repin and D. Kardovsky. Member of the "World of Art" association, participated in exhibitions of the "Union of Russian Artists". The most organic way of self-expression for him was the art of theater. He worked for the "Russian Ballet" of S. Diaghilev, creating scenery based on sketches by L. Bakst and other masters. He moved to New York in 1918, collaborated with the Metropolitan Opera, and the Chicago Opera, and designed many performances, ballets, operas, etc. Later he moved to Chicago and taught at the local Art Institute until 1957. He also worked actively as a master of easel painting, creating canvases in the spirit of decorative-lyrical expressionism. The artist died on December 4, 1978.
